Emulation & Access

How to access and play the Bitmap Brothers' Amiga catalogue on modern hardware.

A Note on Access

The Bitmap Brothers' Amiga catalogue exists in a complicated legal space. The studio closed in 1999; the original game files persist in various preservation archives. Some titles have been commercially re-released — see the Modern page for these. For the original Amiga versions, the most common legitimate access path is through emulation software you own, using disk images from preservation archives.

The Internet Archive hosts a browser-based Amiga emulator with a significant collection of games that can be played in-browser without any setup. This is the easiest starting point for those new to Amiga emulation.

Browser Play

Internet Archive — In-Browser Amiga Emulation

Free · Browser · No Setup

The Internet Archive hosts an Amiga emulator running directly in your browser via the UAE4All emulator core. Many Bitmap Brothers titles are available there. Performance varies by browser and machine; modern browsers on modern hardware generally run the games at full speed. Search the Archive for each game by name.

This is the recommended starting point for anyone who wants to try the games without any technical setup. No configuration, no ROM files, no installation required.

Emulation Software

Amiga Forever (Cloanto)

Commercial · Windows · Legal ROMs Included

The easiest full emulation experience. Amiga Forever is a commercial product that includes licensed Kickstart ROM files and a pre-configured WinUAE installation. It is the legally cleanest way to run Amiga software on modern Windows hardware. Includes a library of legally licensed Amiga software.

FS-UAE

Free · Windows / macOS / Linux · Cross-Platform

FS-UAE is a cross-platform Amiga emulator based on the WinUAE codebase. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it the most accessible option for non-Windows users. Configuration is more involved than Amiga Forever, but the emulation accuracy is excellent. Requires separately sourced Kickstart ROMs (not included for legal reasons).

FS-UAE includes FS-UAE Launcher, a GUI that simplifies configuration. Highly recommended for macOS and Linux users who want accurate Amiga emulation.

WinUAE

Free · Windows Only · Maximum Accuracy

The most accurate Amiga emulator available and the reference implementation for the platform. WinUAE emulates a wide range of Amiga hardware configurations with extraordinary fidelity. It requires more configuration than FS-UAE or Amiga Forever but rewards the effort with near-perfect accuracy.

For playing Bitmap Brothers Amiga games in their original form — at original speed, with original audio — a WinUAE configuration targeting the Amiga 500 (OCS/ECS chipset, 512K chip RAM + 512K slow RAM) is the correct starting point for most titles.

Real Amiga

If you have access to a real Amiga 500 or 1200, Bitmap Brothers titles can be run from original floppy disks or via Gotek floppy disk emulators that serve ADF disk images from USB storage. The Gotek is the standard solution for running software on original Amiga hardware without physical disks.

Original hardware with a CRT television produces the most authentic experience — the scan lines and colour reproduction of a 1980s television are part of the intended visual design of every Amiga game. Emulation on a modern LCD monitor is an excellent substitute, but the original hardware-plus-CRT combination remains the reference experience.

See the Community page and the English Amiga Board for hardware advice and purchasing guidance.

Buy Modern Versions

Two titles are available as modern commercial releases: The Chaos Engine Remastered (Steam, 2013) and Gods Remastered (Steam, 2018). Purchasing these supports the preservation of the Bitmap Brothers' work. See the Modern page for full details and Resources for direct links.
